RV Storage Cost: What To Know & How To Choose The Best Option

There’s nothing like making memories on the open road, seeing the country, enjoying nature, and spending time with your loved ones. RVs offer all that and more, and that’s why they’re more popular than ever. In fact, according to the RV Industry Association, there are now over 11 million RV-owning American households.

That’s a lot of RVs to store, though! Experienced RV owners know that simply stowing your motorhome in your driveway or yard isn’t a good option—for one, it’s against the law or homeowner’s association rules in many places. Secondly, it leaves your RV unprotected from the elements and criminal activity. But what does RV storage cost? And how do you secure the lowest RV storage cost? Don’t worry: we’ve got you covered.

RV storage pricing basics

According to Storage.com, the average monthly RV storage cost is about $130. That’s in line with estimates from various other sources and our industry experience. However, prices can range from as low as $50 to as high as $400, and many factors affect how much you end up paying, from the time of year to the type of storage facility you choose. To find the lowest RV storage cost, keep reading, and we’ll give you a full run-down on what affects prices.

Types of RV storage facilities

BuxBear storage facilities offer personal self-storage units in which you can keep an RV, and that’s the gold standard of RV storage. But there’s more than one type of RV storage. Indoor RV storage costs more, but it also offers much more protection for your RV. In terms of indoor RV storage options, you’ll find both individual units and group options. With group storage, your RV is usually parked on an enclosed lot with many other RVs. That option tends to be less expensive, but it has its downsides. For example, you may only be able to access your RV during regular business hours.

A personal self-storage unit that’s large enough to accommodate an RV is the best option if it’s within your budget. That gets you top-of-the-line security, maximum protection from inclement weather, and more. As such, it can be one of the more expensive options, so it’s essential to look for a storage company that offers competitive pricing with the strongest combination of features—like BuxBear. After all, you’ve spent a lot of money on your RV, so it’s worth protecting.

With outdoor RV storage, you’re basically renting a spot in a large parking lot. RV storage lots can be covered or uncovered, enclosed or open. You’ll also pay more the larger your RV is. Outdoor RV storage lots can be paved or gravel, too. The paved options are better for your RV’s upkeep. The least expensive option is often to park your RV in an uncovered gravel lot, but your RV will be at increased risk of damage from hail, UV rays, natural disasters, thieves, and vandals. Often, these lots will at least have high fences and usually security cameras, but you’re still likely to shave some value off of your RV or shorten its lifespan.

How do you find the lowest RV storage cost?

A few things affect storage rates no matter what you’re looking to store, whether it’s an RV or anything else. You can check out our guide on How to Find Low-Cost Storage for the full scoop, but here are a few important highlights:

Location

You’ve heard it before: Location, location, location! Facilities in busier areas or large cities tend to have higher rates since demand is higher and properties are more expensive. If you’re storing your RV for an extended period of time (like putting it up for the winter), consider expanding your search to include storage facilities further away.

Time of year

Storage unit rates are traditionally highest in the summer when people are more likely to move, kids are going off to college, and families are adding more recreational stuff to their home storage, like kayaks, boats, etc. You'll likely get a better price if you secure a storage rate in the off-season months.

Included amenities

Don't pay for things you don't need. Some RV storage facilities have climate control, which you may not need if you live in an area with a mild climate. Likewise, you may not care about having on-site office staff if you don't plan on visiting often, so you might opt for an automated facility.

How to choose an RV storage option

So, with all of what you've now learned in mind, consider the following factors:

  • Your RV's size

  • Your budget

  • What features you need (i.e., indoor storage, alarms, etc.)

  • What features you don't need

With this combination of factors in mind, you should be able to survey the packages on offer in your area and find something that fits your needs. Remember to check online for special promotions or discounts because many storage companies offer them.

Last but not least—remember to have fun! Your RV is a recreational vehicle, and ownership should be fun. You worked hard to get your motorhome, so find a storage option that maximizes your enjoyment while protecting your investment. And don't forget to actually get your RV out of storage and go out adventuring. You'll never regret spending that quality time with your loved ones.
